The Blackhawk Technical College (BTC) Beloit Center at the Eclipse Center still is scheduled to open by its target date ofAug.1 and offerclasses tostudents startingonAug.24.

“Construction is going very well,” said Dr. Sharon Kennedy, BTC vice president of learning.

Furniture and equipment will fill the center by Aug.1.Withina month,BTC will releaseits class schedule for the Beloit Center’s fall semester, which will beginAug.24,Kennedysaid.

“We’re very excited about opening up a new and expanded center for the Beloit community,” Kennedy said. “We look forward to filling the center with students.”

The Beloit Center will offer classes in health care professions, computertechnology, adult basic education (GED/HSED),EnglishLanguage Learners (ELL), general education, community education and courses targeted to assist students in their transition to programs at BTC’s central campus, shesaid.

Some of the features of the 15,000-square-foot Beloit Center include two fully staffed computer labs, a quasi health/sciencelabforteachingcertifiednursingassistant(CNA)courses andphlebotomy, acontinuingeducation classroom, an area for testing and fac ulty offices , Kennedy said.

Corporate Contractors Inc. began construction on the Blackhawk Technical College Beloit Center in April. BTC decided to build a Beloit Center at the Eclipse Center after flooding caused the college to vacate its former location, in the lower level at the Turtle Creek Bookstore, during fall semester last year. Before the flooding,BTC had prior discussions about increasing enrollment, but hadn’t starting looking for a larger center yet, Kennedy said.

In January, the BTC Board of Directors approved the plan to open the Beloit site at the Eclipse Center.

BTC chose the Eclipse Center because “— it was the best property that we could acquire in terms of the best location andsquare footage,”Kennedysaid.

The college also considered parking, which was not as abundant at the Turtle Creek Bookstore location as it will be at the Eclipse Center, she said.

Other benefits to the new location of the Beloit Center include a bus stop in front of the building and the proximity to Beloit Memorial High School, which makes the center easily accessible,Kennedy said.

“I think the location is perfect,” Kennedy said.
BTC has also been s etting up talks with the library about future collaborations , s he said.
