BELOIT – If you build it, they will come…and hopefully get Beloit area kids interested in careers in construction.

That was the goal of the Corporate Contractors Inc. (CCI) Building The Future event at the Beloit Ironworks campus on Saturday with the first-ever Kids Construction Zone.

Kids and families from around the Stateline Area came out to get hands-on experience with activities from carpentry, concrete and masonry, demolition and excavation, roofing, power tools and heavy equipment, building design and more.

The event was free for all, and organizers said the turnout was better than anticipated with the rain holding off for the family-friendly event.

CCI Director of Business and Workforce Development Heather Dobson said the event got started after students from CareerTek’s Hack-a-Thon event suggested a community event for kids.

“From there, we took it and tried to figure out what we would want that event to look like,” Dobson said. “We brought out all our divisions and departments and had everyone come up with their own idea for a booth and something that would get kids engaged and hands-on. Everyone did their part and made this an amazing event.”

The objective for the construction zone is to reinforce building skills, help develop new tool talents and realize future career path opportunities.
