Celebrating CCI’s ABC of WI POD Gold Awards

The Grain Mass Timber Development | Delafield, WI

The Grain, a pioneering mass timber development, exemplifies environmental responsibility and urban revitalization. A neglected former service station corner lot was transformed into a vibrant, multi-use space spanning two four-story landmark buildings. Key highlights include:

  • Mass timber construction with benefits that include reduced carbon emissions and shortened project timelines, as well as improved indoor air quality and acoustics
  • 60,000 square feet of office space
  • 18,000 square feet dedicated to retail and restaurants
  • 42,000 square feet of underground parking space

Owner: Hendricks Commercial Properties
Architect: Johnson Design, Inc.

The project utilized innovative mass timber building techniques, including dowel-laminated timber (DLT), which helps speed up construction compared to traditional steel methods. DTL panels are optimized for horizontal spans and can be prefabricated off-site.

Despite challenges such as bad soil removal, utility rerouting, and delays in material deliveries, especially the wood beams and columns from Austria and decking from British Columbia, CCI, and the build team remained flexible and seamlessly adapted with creative solutions, including a custom water tank system and a steel H-pile shoring system for foundation stability. Strong coordination among subcontractors, along with CCI’s leadership, ensured a smooth and safe completion.

By collaborating with the owner and architect, our talented build-team safely and methodically created an aesthetically appealing, eco-friendly structure expected to bring over 600 jobs to the local community—boosting the economy and revitalizing downtown Delafield. This achievement underscores CCI’s role as a trusted advisor and partner, pushing the boundaries of modern construction while respecting the environment.

St. Charles Catholic Parish Expansion | Hartland, WI

Expanding the St. Charles Catholic Parish into an architectural landmark demanded innovative solutions and strong team collaboration, ultimately resulting in a remarkable success. Showcasing CCI and the build-team’s dedication to blending traditional and modern construction techniques, the church is the fifth-largest parish in the Milwaukee Archdiocese. Project highlights include:

  • 33,800 square foot traditional yet energy-efficient church that reflects the parish’s Italian heritage
  • A worship space that will accommodate 1,170 people, plus 50 more in the 1,200 square foot choir loft
  • A beautiful domed rotunda, a 118-ft. tall cupola, and terra cotta and gold metallic standing seam metal roofs
  • Ornately hand-painted faux work, handcrafted Carrara marble altar, and Tyrolean stained-glass windows

Architect: Zimmerman Architectural Studios

The Romanesque-style addition features a striking domed rotunda, a 100-ft bell tower, and intricate Italian-inspired elements like the Carrara marble altar. The church’s vibrant interior includes a choir loft, ornate hand-painted murals, restored stained-glass windows, and other beautifully designed religious-themed artistic elements.

Safety and quality were prioritized throughout the project. Despite challenges like poor soil conditions, extreme weather, and COVID-19-related labor shortages, CCI implemented solutions including phased construction to maintain the existing church and school’s operations, installed scaffolding for complex structural work, and took extra precautions to manage noise, dust, and site safety.

CCI’s dedication to craftsmanship, collaboration, and safety all led to the successful completion of a project that enhances the church’s role in serving its growing congregation and the broader community. The new church stands as a symbol of pride and devotion, fulfilling both spiritual and architectural aspirations.

Transforming the Village Supper Club | Delavan, WI

The renovation of the Village Supper Club on the shores of Lake Delavan in southern Wisconsin transformed the 1880s site into a modern masterpiece, seamlessly combining intricate design and craftsmanship with a nod to its historic past. CCI, in collaboration with the new visionary owners, the creative architect, and talented build-team members, preserved its legacy while reimagining it as a contemporary Wisconsin supper club. Key features include:

  • 8,400 square foot dining destination with an amphitheater-like dining room, panoramic lake views, and multi-layered wood-finished ceiling
  • Six fireplaces and a custom-crafted oil-rubbed bronze mesh case hovering above the bar
  • Outdoor seating with a field stone and cedar façade centered around a 29-foot tall stone hearth inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin home

Owners: Allan & Loretta Kaplan
Architect: DMAC Architecture & Interiors

A key challenge involved re-engineering the original foundation walls, with 10 different elevation levels, while preserving the building’s footprint. Prioritizing safety throughout the project, CCI performed nearly half of the trade work, keeping the timeline on track despite delays. The custom finishes, some sourced from Europe, demanded meticulous craftsmanship, and the team’s collaboration and dedication to precision ensured flawless execution.

The unique design elements, including 200+ light fixtures, concealed HVAC systems, an amphitheater-like dining room, and the signature A-frame ceiling, required exceptional coordination and meticulous installation. The ceiling itself involved multiple layers of framing, soundproofing, and finishing, with every detail executed to perfection.

Through teamwork and attention to detail, CCI and the build-team successfully completed a remarkable renovation that honors the supper club’s history while establishing a new benchmark for modern supper club experiences.

Construction Excellence and Innovation

Each Gold Award-winning project reflects CCI’s ability to push the boundaries of design and construction. From The Grain’s mass timber approach to St. Charles Catholic Parish’s historical reverence and the Village Supper Club’s revitalized charm, these endeavors blend aesthetic appeal with practical functionality, reinforcing CCI’s leadership in constructing innovatively designed projects of varying purposes and complexities.
